National Organization for Women (NOW) & Oregon NOW Endorse Kate Brown for Governor
NOW Becomes 5th Women's Advocacy Organization to Endorse Governor Brown
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Portland, OR -- The National Organization for Women (NOW), in conjunction with its state chapter Oregon NOW, is endorsing Governor Kate Brown for the 2016 election. This is the second time in the week following Bud Pierce's controversial remarks on domestic violence that a women's advocacy organization has announced its endorsement of Governor Brown.
In the endorsement, NOW and Oregon NOW called Governor Brown "both a champion of progress for women and an accomplished leader who gets things done within our government system." NOW joins four other organizations focused on issues that primarily affect women in backing the governor, including EMILY's List, Planned Parenthood PAC of Oregon, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon PAC, and Mother PAC.
NOW President Terry O'Neill and Oregon NOW Executive Director Michelle Ganow-Jones praised Governor Brown's long record of fighting for women:
Terry O’Neill, President of the National Organization for Women:
"The National Organization for Women is proud to endorse Kate Brown--a tireless advocate for Oregon women and working families. She has strengthened family leave policies, expanded access to breast cancer screenings, and raised the minimum wage. And as the first openly bisexual governor in America, she has blazed a trail for women and LGBTQ people in politics. We applaud her commitment to fighting gender-based discrimination."
Michelle Ganow-Jones, Executive Director of Oregon NOW:
"The Oregon chapter of the National Organization for Women is thrilled to endorse Governor Kate Brown. She shares NOW's values and vision for Oregon and has an accomplished track record of working hard - and succeeding - to improve the lives of women and girls in our state. We can't imagine a better qualified person to be our Governor for the next two years - and beyond."
"I am pleased and honored to have the support of the National Organization of Women and Oregon NOW," said Governor Brown. "Throughout my career, I have fought for equality and tolerance for all Oregonians no matter their gender, race, religion or sexual orientation. I'm proud to have NOW's backing because we share these values, and their work to engage women at the grassroots level has been critical to the feminist movement for decades."
"I look forward to serving Oregon as governor in the coming years, and working to make Oregon a place where men and women can equally thrive," Governor Brown added.
