Weingarten highlights major contrast between Brown and her Republican challenger on healthcare, education

American Federation of Teachers (AFT) National President Randi Weingarten came to Portland on Tuesday to campaign with Governor Kate Brown and applaud her work to expand healthcare and support hardworking nurses and teachers. AFT represents 1.7 million members nationwide including educators, teachers, and other health professionals.

“As we see in Washington D.C. a President who has tried to undermine and decimate the protections for pre-existing conditions, you have a governor in this state who is doing everything in her power to make sure that people have the healthcare they need in Oregon,” Weingarten said.

Gov. Brown and Weingarten held a roundtable discussion with Oregon nurses and health professionals to hear their perspectives and identify potential solutions. Issues discussed included Oregon’s Medicaid expansion, pediatric care, alcohol and drug addiction, and caretaking for patients with Alzheimer's.

In a press conference afterward, Weingarten spoke passionately about Governor Brown’s leadership on health care, education, and other issues that matter to working Oregonians.

“Oregon has a governor who actually knows what she’s talking about, is willing to listen, and wants to solve the problems for regular working people in Oregon. That is what we need to see across America and that’s why I’m proud to say, 'Yes, this President is on Team Kate.'”

Weingarten and Gov. Brown also attended a phone bank with union members who were fired up to get out the vote. Members of AFT, Oregon School Employees Association (OSEA), and Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals (OFNHP) called members around the state to encourage them to vote.

Finally, the pair gave welcome remarks to kick off a student debt clinic being put on by the AFT, where they discussed the complex issues of student loan forgiveness. Inside the debt clinic, trainers educated local Portland educators, nurses and public employees on these student debt concerns to help them explore options for managing debt.

“The student debt crisis is a serious issue and Kate Brown is working to ensure college is affordable,” Weingarten said.
