Head of National Sierra Club, Tribal Leaders Applaud Brown’s Commitment to Protect Oregon’s Clean Air, Water

Today Governor Kate Brown announced her plans to sign an executive order permanently banning offshore drilling in Oregon. Earlier this year, the Trump Administration announced a controversial plan to dramatically expand drilling leases across 90 percent of the U.S. outer continental shelf, including the entire West Coast.

“I’m tired of waiting for the federal government to come to their senses and realize that this is a terrible mistake,” Gov. Brown said. “This executive order will make it clear to oil and gas speculators that Oregon is not for sale. It will also provide certainty to the businesses on the Oregon Coast that depend on our natural landscape and our coastline for their livelihoods, providing good-paying jobs for working families.”

Gov. Brown committed to working with Sen. Arnie Roblan (D - Coos Bay) and Oregon’s Coastal Caucus to pass legislation in 2019 to further strengthen protections from offshore drilling. Gov. Brown also renewed her call on U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to remove Oregon from Donald Trump’s proposal to open the entire West Coast to offshore oil drilling.

Michael Brune, the national executive director of the Sierra Club, joined Gov. Brown for the announcement.

“Kate Brown is setting an example for Governors all over the country about how to protect their coasts and their communities from Trump’s dangerous plan,” Brune said. “In Knute Buehler, you have a politician who is peddling rhetoric about the environment while collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars from the exact corporations who are trying to gut Oregon’s clean air laws and natural legacy.”

Alysia and Elke Littleleaf, enrolled members of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, also expressed their support for today’s announcement.

"Like our ancestors have since time immemorial, we, as indigenous people, see ourselves deeply connected to the land, air, and water, and the creatures that cannot speak for themselves,” they said. “We rely on clean water and we rely on the salmon to return every season to feed our families, inspire our communities, and help power our economy, so we can’t allow big oil companies to bring giant oil spills like Deepwater Horizon and the Exxon Valdez to Oregon’s coast. We’re glad we can count on Governor Brown to do everything in her power to protect our salmon from oil spills."

“I don’t have anything positive to say about Knute Buehler,” Elke added. “With him, it’s kind of like gambling, and I’d rather not gamble. Kate Brown gives our state a strong foundation and we know we can count on her to support tribal people and keep Oregon clean, healthy, and green.”
