Today President Barack Obama endorsed Governor Kate Brown for re-election.

President Barack Obama:

"When I was President, I had the opportunity to work side by side with Governor Kate Brown through some very difficult moments, including the tragedy at Umpqua Community College, where her effective, efficient leadership helped Oregon come together at a time when it had lost so much. Her strength and compassion have always shown the real meaning of Oregon values. I’m proud to support my friend Kate Brown, and hope that in these trying times Oregonians recognize as I do that it’s important to keep Oregon moving forward as an example to the nation of how to come together and get things done."

Three years ago today, Oregon was shaken by a shooting at the Umpqua Community College campus in Roseburg. A week later, President Obama and Governor Brown met privately with families in Roseburg.

Governor Kate Brown:

“On the morning of Oct. 1, 2015, just eight months after I became Governor of Oregon, I got a call I will never forget. A young man had entered Umpqua Community College in Roseburg and started shooting. I spent the next two days with mothers who had lost their sons, fathers who had lost their daughters, and boys and girls who had lost the sibling they looked up to. It was a deeply troubling time and a profound experience. Once I had set a course for the community to begin recovering from this tragedy, I made a commitment to do what I can to ensure this would never happen in Oregon again.

“Thanks to the support of President Obama and Oregonians across the state, we can all continue to come together as a community and protect the Oregon that we love.”
